About
MARXEN STUDIOS
and
GALLERY of ART
My paintings are bright, colorful and optimistic. They underscore the need and right that all people have the same opportunity to experience the beauty of this world.
My reward comes not only from the act of creating my art, but from knowing that those who have one or more of my pieces will develop their own bond with the painting, and continue receiving joy from it.
I’ve been painting on a professional basis since 2007. In that time, I’ve placed work in more than 40 shows throughout Northern California, and sold hundreds of pieces to collectors.
I have won numerous awards, most recently the Outstanding Achievement award for acrylics in the 2023 California State Fair. I’ve won several Awards of Merit from the Fair. I recently had a major exhibit where nearly all of my 25 pieces sold. I’ve also had my work included in the prestigious Crocker-Kingsley Show at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento. My most recent large exhibition at Archival Gallery in January 2023 nearly sold out. My work is available in several galleries, including Gallery Sausalito, Gallery 5830 in Truckee, Iron Willow Gallery in Placerville, Archival Gallery in Sacramento and High Hand Gallery in Loomis.
I’ve received media coverage of my work. The Sacramento News and Review stated: “Bright and fauvist, Jim Marxen’s landscapes bear an influence from the work of Gregory Kondos. But Marxen also textures his ’scapes with post-impressionist pointilistic brushstrokes. His urban scenes, which include Sacramento-area landmarks and snapshots of daily life, have the sharper outlines and harder edges of cities—but his palette of vivid hues doesn’t pale.”
Sacramento Style Magazine said this about my work: “His colorful urban landscapes and figures nearly jump off of the canvas with rich vibrant hues.”
I’ve been featured on the cover of East Sacramento News, Sacramento Inside Publications, and the Sacramento Gay and Lesbian Center’s Revel newsletter. My work and I were recently featured on Good Day Sacramento.
I was one of a handful of Sacramento artists selected to create murals that enliven the Franklin Boulevard District.
